FIELD LOADOUT
Yellowstone Autumn Loadout
The setup I use to deal with cold mornings, constant moving and itinerant wildlife photography between Yellowstone and Grand Teton during the fall.
This is not a theoretical selection of products, but a configuration built over time to tackle long days in the field in a setting like Yellowstone. Each element below has a role. precise: to help me move well, stay comfortable and best manage the pace of a photographic trip made of departures at dawn, stops, sightings and continuous changes of scenery.
CLOTHING SYSTEM
Layers that build comfort
Magnum Man Jacket
ZottaForest
It serves me as a reliable outer layer on colder mornings, on windy days and in all the phases in which I need protection without sacrificing too much freedom of movement.
It comes into play especially at dawn, during longer stops, while travelling by car with constant ups and downs and in all situations where the weather changes rapidly.
Bhutan Man Fleece
ZottaForest
For me it’s a very useful mid layer when I want to add warmth in a concrete way without weighing down the setup too much. It helps keep you comfortable during the coldest hours of the day.
I use it mostly in the early morning, at sunset and in all those situations where the temperature drops but I want to continue to move freely.
Gardena Man Shirt
ZottaForest
I like it because it adds versatility to the system. It’s a practical piece during the most active phases, for those times when you don’t need a heavy layer but still want to stay organized and comfortable on the pitch.
I use it in the central hours of the day, during simpler journeys and in all situations where the climate is more manageable but I want to maintain technical and functional clothing.
Shot Man Pant
ZottaForest
I’m interested in freedom of movement, durability and comfort during long days, between dirt roads, quick stops and continuous changes of position on the ground.
These are the trousers I use throughout the day, especially when I have to get in and out of the car often, walking in meadows, getting close to the ground, or quickly adapting to the scene.
FOOTWEAR
Mobility and stability on the ground
AKU Trek Ballistic GTX
AKU
On a trip like this, I’m interested in a shoe that remains reliable and comfortable for many hours. Stability, protection and a good feeling of security on dirt roads, damp meadows and uneven terrain are what count.
It is crucial throughout the day, especially when I alternate driving, short walks, sudden stops and continuous exits from the vehicle to make the most of every photographic opportunity.
HANDS
Lightweight protection and operability
Lightweight gloves
Field accessory
In a context like Yellowstone I’m interested in light protection that helps manage the morning chill without compromising too much sensitivity and speed of action on the camera.
I use them especially in the early hours of the day, when quickly getting out of the car and in all those situations where it is necessary to remain operational without completely uncovered hands.
EYE PROTECTION
Protection from light and glare
Scott Glasses
SCOTT
They help me better manage light, glare, and long hours outdoors. In open landscapes like these Having serious eye protection really makes a difference to your overall comfort.
I use them in the central hours of the day, during transfers and in all situations where bright light and open spaces make it easier to strain your eyes.
CARRY SYSTEM
Transportation and organization on the field
Fjord 50-C with RCI Unit
NYA-EVO
I need a backpack that keeps together the photographic and technical parts in an orderly fashion, without becoming uncomfortable during long and very dynamic days.
I use it for the entire duration of the trip, especially when I want to have the camera body with me, optics, extra layers and small accessories while always maintaining good balance when moving.
PHOTOGRAPHY SETUP
Do you also want to see the photographic equipment I use in the field?
In addition to the specific loadout for Yellowstone, I also use a general photographic setup consisting of from two camera bodies, selected lenses and some special tools that I carry with me on my travels.
